Panel on Population Growth and Human Welfare in Africa (2006-2009)

Terms of ReferenceThe Panel aims to stimulate scientific discourse on population growth and its implications for human welfare in Africa. Sub-Saharan Africa’s population is set to increase significantly from 767 million in 2006 to about 1.7 billion in 2050. In some countries, the population will triple within the next forty years primarily as a result of high fertility. This high population growth is happening in a context of high levels of poverty, low economic growth, food insecurity, and poor, overburdened health systems. The Panel wishes to promote the sharing of knowledge on a) the linkages between population growth, the environment, and human well-being; b) fertility trends and future prospects for the fertility transition in Africa; c) and the consequences of rapid urbanization in Africa. |
