International Seminar on
The family, the market or the State? Intergenerational economic support in an ageing society
University of Geneva, Switzerland, 22-23 June 2010
Jointly organized by the AIDELF (International association of French-Speaking Demographers) and theOrganized by the IUSSP Scientific
Panel on the Impacts of Population Ageing
As the world population ages, the relative weight of the age classes changes drastically, and sometimes quickly, and the economic arrangements that seemed to work satisfactorily up to a few years ago are now under stress, and may collapse in the future. The consequences of the current structural changes may be counteracted if behaviors, traditions and formal and informal rules adapt with sufficient speed. This may call into question such diverse themes as age at retirement, pension system arrangements, labor market participation of the young and the older workers, private transfers between the generations, labor division within the household, gender roles, etc. More generally, the balance between the family, the market and the state is, once again, called into question.
Although the geographic focus of the seminar will be worldwide, special emphasis will be placed on the consequences of ageing in developed countries, where ageing is more advanced, and where the role of immigration on the intergenerational system of exchanges needs to be more fully understood.
The seminar will run parallel, and is organized in collaboration, with the AIDELF 16th General Conference on the more general, but strictly related topic of "Intergenerational Relations: Demographic Issues" (21-24 June 2010 – read more about this at: http://www.aidelf.ined.fr/). Great synergies are expected from this IUSSP-AIDELF cooperation, starting from the local organizing committee, which will be that of AIDELF.
A Conference fee (still to be decided, but presumably ranging between 50 and 100 Euros for IUSSP or AIDELF members, higher for others) will be charged to participants. No travel support is available for this seminar.
Deadline for submission of short abstracts: 16 November 2009
Deadline for submission of long abstracts (4 pages) or full paper: 1 March 2010
Abstracts must be submitted in English or French, as an attachment to an email sent to:
Gustavo De Santis (desantis@ds.unifi.it)
Both English and French may be used at the seminar, where no simultaneous translation will be provided.
Information to authors will be as follows:
- by 15 December 2009: they will be notified whether their abstract has been refused or considered of interest for the seminar (which does not mean accepted, yet).
- by 1 April 2010: they will be notified if their paper (or long abstract) has been accepted or refused. This decision will be final.
For more information, please contact Gustavo De Santis (desantis@ds.unifi.it).
