Workshop on the transition to adulthood in industrialized countries

Outline

This workshop is the first meeting of the new IUSSP Scientific Panel on the Transition to Adulthood. The workshop is funded by the Department of Sociology at the University of Calgary.

The IUSSP Scientific Panel on the Transition to Adulthood in Developed Countries, chaired by Anne Gauthier, in collaboration with the Department of Sociology of the University of Calgary and with support from the MacArthur Foundation organized its first meeting and workshop on the "Transition to Adulthood in Industrialized Countries". The workshop brought together nine panel members to discuss methodological approaches to the analysis of the transition to adulthood in industrialized countries. The Panel's aim is to examine the influence of macro-level characteristics on transitions to adulthood at the individual level from a cross-national and historical perspective. The Panel reviewed the strengths and limitations of analytical methods, including those focusing on single or multiple transitions to adulthood. For this purpose, Anne Gauthier and the research team at the University of Calgary prepared a database containing macro-level indicators for OECD countries for the period 1970-1999, which is available at http://soci.ucalgary.ca/fypp.

During its mandate, the Panel plans to undertake at least 5 core and a number of satellite research projects. Core projects will examine national census data, the behavior and values of university students, financial self-sufficiency as an indicator of the transition to adulthood, cross-national patterns in the norms and values of family, marriage, parenthood, and children, and evidence for the transition to adulthood based on Family and Fertility Surveys (FSS).
