Becoming an adult is linked to the acquisition of resources, skills and roles that mark autonomy and independence from the natal family. Even before the crucial period of transition to adulthood, ties between generations profoundly shape the acquisition of resources and skills (such as human and social capital). During the increasingly longer and more complex transition to adulthood, intergenerational ties influence subsequent choices and trajectories. Intergenerational transfers can on the one hand facilitate the transition to independence for some young adults; for others, the absence of transfers may contribute to the reproduction of social inequality. After the transition to adulthood, intergenerational ties persist, creating life long economic and emotional bonds. Cultural differences and welfare institutions are also importantly influencing the relative importance of intergenerational ties before, during and after the transition to adulthood.
In this seminar, we will deal with the interplay between intergenerational ties before, during, and after the early adult years employing historical, comparative and dynamic methods of analysis. We welcome innovative contributions making use of longitudinal and/or intergenerational data, of original methods, of international comparisons. Although the focus is on developed countries, contributions addressing the issue at the global level or comparisons between developed and developing countries are welcome.
Scholars who have already accepted to present their work in the seminar include: Sheldon H. Danziger, Kathleen Mullan Harris, Aart C. Liefbroer, Ross Macmillan, Jeylan T. Mortimer, and Laurent Toulemon.
Papers presented at the conference will be invited for submission to a peer-reviewed international journal.
