Survey of Teaching and Training in Demography

IUSSP Working Group on Teaching

SuRVEY FORM

It was decided to draw up two questionnaires: starting with the questionnaire already prepared by Nancy Denton, 'Academic Structure of Demography Questionnaire, dated October 30, 1998.

The new questionnaire will focus on the academic world, population centres, teaching programmes, universities. It will be revised by all members of the Working Group and then finalised by Graziella Caselli. The following items will be included: name of different degrees/diplomas in population studies, duration, definition of a unit, credit allocated, number of graduate and under-graduate students in the various teaching programmes, funding, distance learning...). This questionnaire will also be based on the CICRED questionnaire currently in process (list of research centres...).

M. Mazouz will prepare a second questionnaire focusing on statistics (number of students, number of centres, different degrees...). As part of the questionnaire, a programme description could be annexed (in standard format).

Once the questionnaires have been returned, the first step is to provide an overview of certain key bodies and the course they hold. A universal evaluation of basic technical courses, overlapping 3 or 4 key courses, and their required reading lists will be performed. Importance will be given to the existence of teaching material: manuals, working papers, textbooks. A group will be created to assess the samples obtained. G. Caselli points out that the main objectives of the Working Group Programme of Action are to analyse the current situation and formulate new proposals.

The results of the survey will be analysed by the Working Group members and presented at the IUSSP General Conference, Brazil.
