The aim of NIDI is to conduct excellent scientific research on population issues of societal relevance. This research focuses on both national and international issues and often uses the life course perspective as its theoretical framework. The staff of the institute consists of about 60 persons, the majority of whom conduct scientific research. About half of the NIDI budget is provided by the KNAW as core funding, whereas the other half has to be acquired externally.

The Development Studies Unit (DSU) at Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas (Mexico) has two full-time research professorships to start in August 2009. The unit’s main program is its Doctorate in Development Studies, which accepts new cohorts every three years since 2003, and enjoys the highest recognition awarded by Mexico’s National Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT for its Spanish acronym). Within its programs of excellence, the DSU’s doctorate ranks as “Internationally Competent”. DSU is the home base of several international scholarly networks, including the International Migration and Development Network, the Critical Development Studies Network, and the Society and Nanotechnology Network. The qualities we are seeking for the new colleagues include the following: to have obtained a Ph.D. in one of the social sciences in the past 5-15 years, with a dissertation which explored a central theme in development studies, broadly defined.

While it is not indispensible to have teaching experience, the successful candidates will have to demonstrate an excellent potential for scholarly work and publications to be admitted in Mexico’s National System of Researchers (SNI for its Spanish acronym), as well as relocating to the city of Zacatecas. We are about to start the third cohort of doctoral students in August of 2009 with a recently reformed curriculum which strengthens training in core development issues and social science research methodology. Because we are in CONACYT’s Programs of Excellence, all of our admitted students (Mexicans and foreigners alike) receive a living scholarship stipend for three years, renewable for a fourth year. The city of Zacatecas is the capital of the state with the same name. Being one of Mexico’s cities named by UNESCO’s as “Heritage of Humankind,” Zacatecas has a beautiful colonial architecture in its historical downtown core. It has a population of about 200,000 and an altitude of 2,400 meters above sea level, with a temperate climate most of the time. Although some of the DSU’s activities are held in English, most are conducted in Spanish. Therefore, full command of spoken and written Spanish is expected of successful candidates.

For more information about the program, see. http://www.estudiosdeldesarrollo.net/. For other questions, contact the DSU director: Dr. Raúl Delgado Wise (rdwise@estudiosdeldesarrollo.net) or the doctorate’s director: Dr. Oscar Pérez Veyna (pveyna@estudiosdeldesarrollo.net). Interested candidates should send applications to: Dr. Oscar Pérez Veyna, Responsable del Programa de Doctorado en Estudios del Desarrollo, Unidad Académica en Estudios del Desarrollo, Av. Preparatoria s/n, Col. Hidráulica. 98065 Zacatecas, Zac. México. Full applications consist of a cover letter expressing interest and outlining your research and teaching interests, one-two samples of recent publications (or dissertation chapters), and requesting three referees that they send their references directly to Dr. Pérez Veyna. The C.V. should contain the names of the three references who will be sending letters.

The deadline to send applications to receive full consideration is 30 June 2009, but we will continue to receive applications until the positions are filled.
