Jerzy Z. Holzer

1930 - 2001

Professor Jerzy Z. Holzer, long-term director of the Institute of Statistics and Demography, Warsaw School of Economics, and chairman of the Division of Social Sciences Polish Academy of Sciences, died suddenly September 29, 2001 at age 71.

Jerzy Z. Holzer was born on July 24, 1930. In 1953 he graduated from the Central School of Planning and Statistics in Warsaw from which he obtained also further degrees (Ph. D. In 1963, Doctor habilitatus in 1968). In 1979 he received the title of professor from the State Council. In 1991 Professor Holzer was elected a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and in 1995 - a member of the Academia Europea. In the period of 1981-1985 he was a member of the IUSSP Council.

He started working as a student - assistant in the Chair of Statistics, Central School of Planning and Statistics in 1950 and continued his work for the School (since 1991 renamed Warsaw School of Economics/Szkola Glówna Handlowa) with some breaks until the end of his life.

In the period of 1963-1966 he lectured at the university of Ghana in Legon and came back to Africa for two years of 1971-1973 as regional adviser of the uN, working at the Population Programme Centre, Economic Commision for Africa in Addis Ababa. Immediately after "the African period" he received a post of demographer in the Division of Social Affairs of the uN in Geneva (1973-1977).

Professor Holzer returned to Poland in 1977 and in 1978 was nominated a director of the Institute of Statistics and Demography, and kept this position for 21 years, by September 1999.

He played a very important role in Polish demography: as a scientist, organizer and leader of many research projects (national and international) as well as a teacher, respected and admired by his students. He contributed to the education of several generations of Polish demographers and his "Demography" is the most widely used handbook in demographic analysis in Poland. Professor Holzer introduced Polish demography to the international scientific community and networks of international scientific collaboration - he was a great Ambassador of Polish demography to the world.

His death is a great loss to Polish and international science. Professor Holzer will always remain in our grateful memory.

Le professeur Jerzy Z. Holzer, Directeur de l'Institut de Statistique et de Démographie de l'Ecole d'Etudes Economiques de Varsovie et Président du Département des Sciences Sociales de l'Académie des Sciences de Pologne est mort subitement le 29 septembre 2001 à l'âge de 71 ans.

Jerzy Z. Holzer est né le 24 juillet 1930. Après avoir obtenu une licence à l'Ecole Centrale de…(Planning) et de Statistiques de Varsovie, et où il obtiendra un Doctorat en 1963 et un Doctor Habilitatus en 1968, il reçoit en 1979 le titre de Professeur au Conseil d'Etat. En 1991, il est élu membre de l'Académie Polonaise des Sciences, et membre de l'Académia Europa en 1995. Il fut membre de l'IUSSP de 1981 à 1985.

Il a commencé sa carrière en 1950, alors qu'il était encore étudiant, au poste d' assistant professeur de la chaire de Statistiques à l'Ecole Centrale de (Planning) et de Statistiques et a continué à travailler pour l'école (re-nommée Ecole d'Etudes Economiques de Varsovie en 1991 - Szokola Glowna Handlowa) et ce, jusqu'à la fin de sa vie.

Entre 1963 et 1966 il enseigne à l'université du Ghana à Lagon et reparten Afrique, à Addis-Abeba, pour une période de deux ans entre 1971-1973 où il occupera le poste de Conseiller Régional de l'ONu, au Population Programme Center de la Commission Economique pour l'Afrique. Il obtient ensuite un poste de démographe à la Division des Affaires sociales des Nations unies à Genève (1973-1977).

Le Professeur Holzer sera de retour en Pologne en 1977 et nommé Directeur de l'Institut des Statistiques et de la Démographie en 1978, un poste qu'il occupera jusqu'en 1999.

Il a joué un rôle important dans la démographie polonaise en tant que chercheur, organisateur et chef de nombreux projets (nationaux et internationaux) mais aussi en tant que professeur, respecté et admiré par ses étudiants. Il a contribué à l'éducation de plusieurs générations de démographes polonais et sa " Démographie " est devenu un ouvrage incontournable en Pologne dans l' étude d'analyse démographique.

Le Professeur Holzer, reconnu comme un ambassadeur de la démographie polonaise dans le monde a largement contribué à la faire connaûtre auprès de la communauté scientifique internationale et des réseaux de collaboration scientifique internationaux.

Sa disparition représente une grande perte pour la science polonaise et internationale. Le Professeur Holzer sera à jamais présent dans notre mémoire.
