Notice of the death of Pat Rosie Clara Caldwell

Members of the Union have lost one of their most active and influential colleagues with the passing of Pat Caldwell on Saturday 24 May 2008. Her partnership with former IUSSP President Professor Jack Caldwell was one of the most remarkable and productive collaborations in the history of demography.

Pat Caldwell with friendsBorn in Lansdowne near Taree, New South Wales, Australia on 12 January 1922, Pat undertook courses in Anthropology at the University of Sydney before marriage and childbearing interrupted her studies. Following the death of her first husband, Pat met and married Jack, beginning a union of over 60 years. Their path together into demography began with Jack’s PhD research in Thailand, then Malaya in 1959 at a time of fractious nation building. Though neither had ever been overseas their insatiable curiosity overcame the trepidation of taking a young family into unknown places, and they initiated a pattern that was to lead them to Africa, the United States, India, and eventually throughout the world on a quest for understanding the cultures, politics and history that shape the human population.

From the earliest work Pat made important contributions to the books, surveys and articles that were published by Jack. In the mid 1970s these contributions were increasingly recognized by joint authorship.

This was nowhere more clear than the work they did in India in collaboration with P.H. Reddy. Pat’s early anthropological training came to the fore as she went from house to house in isolated villages listening to the stories of women and girls and recording and interpreting the meaning of their lives in the midst of dramatic social and cultural change. Pat and Jack CaldwellHer sharp sense of justice and fair play was often piqued, and she never hesitated to speak out on behalf of the oppressed, whether in the offices of petty officials or the grand conference rooms of international agencies.

Pat and Jack always approached everyone they met with an openness and welcome that turned acquaintances into friends and colleagues into family. Pat could count among her “children” generations of demographers and assistants on all continents. The IUSSP Conferences and Seminars were always a reunion. This website has been established as a tribute to the contributions that Pat made to the Union, and recognition of the sense of gratitude so many members feel in having known her.

The IUSSP thanks the following members for their kind messages. Please contact us if you would like to post a message

I am really very sad to hear the sudden demise of Pat Caldwell. Please convey my condolences to the beraved family of Caldwells. I still remember, I met both Pat Caldwell and J. Caldwell in the International Institute for Population Sciences Mumbai-88 some years back in the 1980s when Professor K.Srinivasan was the then director of IIPS. Recently I saw Prof. Caldwell at the IUSSP conference, Tours, France. I strongly feel Dembography means Caldwells, Caldwells means Demography.

Very sorry to hear of Pat's passing. She was a great woman. I will always remember the time we took Jack and Pat to a highland Hmong village over a somewhat rough and precipitous road. I am saddened to learn that Pat Caldwell passed away two days ago. I have known Pat for over three decades and worked with her and her husband for the whole of 1990s and part of the 21st century on their famous project on HIV/AIDS in Africa which they used to mentor many African scholars including me. She was a great mother to us always working hard with us, not fearing the African difficult situations. Before 1990s, the Caldwells were in Africa for three decades doing demographic research and mentoring many Africans. May Almight God bless Pat's soul and adequately reward her for loving Africa.

James P.M. NTOZI

As the outpouring of messages from friends and colleagues around the world testifies, Pat's death has come as a shock to all of us. But Pat lives on in the hearts of all of us and will continue to inspire us as we carry forward the research traditions and directions that Pat and Jack Caldwell set for our beloved field of demography.

Not only will the generous work and care provided by Pat Caldwell be missed by all her colleagues at IUSSP but also, the family planning movement in Australia will miss her staunch support. She was part and parcel of the work of the Australian family planning movement and the Australian Reproductive Health Foundation for many years. My heart goes out to Professor Jack Caldwell and the rest of Pat's family. May they look back on her achievements with pride and pleasure.
Dianne Proctor

This is sad news, and sad especially for Jack and the family. Pat's contributions and support in the work of the establishment of the Australian Reproductive Health Foundation, and of the Alliance, was invaluable, and generously given.

This is to express my sincere sympathy to Jack and his family for the Loss of Pat. I remember Jack and Pat's last visit to the Sociology Department, University of Ghana in the early eighties. Indeed Pat was very supportive in organising the series of Seminars. We in Ghana are very grateful for Jack and Pat's support in introducing and promoting the study of Demography not only in the Sociology Department but also the support to the Regional Institute of Population studies (RIPS). Indeed RIPS has trained almost all leading demographers in Africa. We are indeed grateful. May Pat's Soul rest in perfect peace.

Clara Korkor FAYORSEY MANTE

Ranjana KAR

t is very sad to receive the news about the death of Pat Caldwell. I have known her as first class demographer who was very kind, humble, respectful, and highly intellectual. She had always left people with nice remembrance. My deep condolence to Prof. Jack Caldwell and the family.

Rshood KHRAIF

I am sorry to hear about the passing away of Pat Caldwell. The last time I saw her was at the 2005 IUSSP meeting in France, and I enjoyed the discussion that I had with her at that time. I did not know that I would not see her again. What a pity. She was like a mother to all students from Nigeria who came to the Australian National University to study demography. I am sure those from several other countries will say the same thing about her. I remember that she and Jack took the time to travel to a remote area to see me when I was doing the fieldwork for my dissertation and encouraged me to further explore some topics by using in-depth interviews. I know that Professor Caldwell will feel her departure very deeply. My heart goes out to him at this difficult time. It is my prayer that God will grant him and the family the fortitude to bear the loss.

Jacob ADETUNJI

May God Give Jack strength to bear this personal loss. The field of demography will though remain with a void.

Sanghmitra Sheel ACHARYA

It is with profound grief I read the news about the demise of Pat Caldwell. I met the Caldwells first at Gandhigram in the early Seventies and it blossomed into a very warm relationship for four decades. I always cherished my memories with them in Gandhigram, Brussels, Bombay and Dharwad. May her soul rest in peace,

P. Sadasivan NAIR
