Daniel J. Hogan Obituary (1942-2010)

April 28th, 2010.

Dear Friends,

It is with profound sadness that I report to you the demise of Daniel Hogan, a great friend and scholar, and a major contributor to the field of population and environment.

American by birth, he became virtually Brazilian, living and working for 35 years as a Professor at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), in Campinas, Brazil, near Sao Paolo. He trained many top Brazilian demographers and was (with me and 4 others) part of the first (and only) Committee on Population and Environment at IUSSP in 1990-94, which helped pave the way (along with NIH funding) for the development of both PERN and the new field of Population and Environment. He organized and hosted perhaps the first international conference on the topic in Campinas in 1992, attended by Francisco Pichon and me in making the first significant presentation of findings from the initial 1990 survey of migrant colonists in Ecuador, along with other early case studies on population and environment in the Philippines, India, Nepal, Thailand, Cameroon, Brazil, Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, Argentina and Peru, which ultimately led to a book Dan and I co-edited, published in 1999 by IUSSP. I still clearly remember the visit to his house on a sunny day in December1992 following the conference, meeting his sweet American wife, and the nice cooling caipiriña drinks he served us.

Dan was not only active in IUSSP, PAA and PERN but also one of the people responsible for the creation of PERN, a mentor to many Brazilian scholars, and a wonderful humane person. I crossed paths with him at many international and PAA meetings over the past 25 years, including in October 2009 at the IUSSP Conference in Morocco, where he mentioned having had health problems and surgery, but looked and laughed as always, and gave no clue to dealing with advancing cancer.

I will miss him dearly. All of us who knew him will miss him dearly.

Professor Daniel J. Hogan was part of the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (IFCH) at the University of Campinas (Unicamp). Distinguished in the field of demography, he served as Provost for Graduate Studies from 2002 to 2005. He was also a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and served as Professor and Researcher of the Unicamp Population Studies Center (NEPO) and the Environmental Studies Center (NEPAM). The most recent study coordinated by Daniel Hogan addresses urban growth, vulnerability, and adaptation to climate change in the coastal municipalities of the State of São Paulo.
