Notice of the death of Lister Hopkins
Lister Hopkins, perhaps the oldest member of the IUSSP, died at the age of 98 in Canberra, Australia on 26 October 2008.
Lister Hopkins had a very long and distinguished career in official statistics specializing in population statistics. He was Assistant Statistician in Palestine from 1936 to 1944 and then conducted the Census of the West Indies in 1946. He was recruited by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 1951 and rose to be the head of the Population and Labour Force Division of the ABS, a position he held for many years. He was a regular attendee at the seminar program of the Department of Demography at the Australian National University up to the last couple of years of his life. As a young man, he had been a Rhodes Scholar.
