PhD Grants, INED, 2011-2012
Each year INED (Institut national d'etudes demographiques, the French institute for demographic research) hosts and provides funding to a few PhD students who are just entering the PhD dissertation-writing stage. PhD candidates benefit from the scientific environment of the institute and have access to INED resources (such as documentation, information technology, methodology, and surveys) and are involved in the research activities of the research group or division that hosts them. One senior INED researcher acts as a supervisor in addition to the student's supervisor at his or her own university. Because no formal classes or courses are offerred at INED the student must have completed all required coursework and be in the first or second year of the dissertation stage.
The net amount of the grant is of 1400 Euros per month.

Call for Editor and Book Review Editor
European Journal of Population
Volumes 26 – 30, 2010 - 2014
Springer and the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS)invite nominations for editorship and book review editorship of the European Journal of Population. This leading scientific journal in the field of population, with 4 issues per year, is published by Springer under the auspices of EAPS. It addresses a broad public of researchers, policy makers and others concerned with population issues and their consequences. Its aim is to improve understanding of population phenomena by publishing work that contributes to the development of theory and methods, and that spans the boundaries between demography and such disciplines as sociology, anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science and epidemiology.
The Editorial Committee of the European Journal of Population consists of two Editors. Together they are responsible for accepting and rejecting manuscripts on the basis of quality of the research presented and the suitability of the subject matter; guiding manuscripts through the review process; overseeing revisions; and planning issues. In addition, four associate editors are part of the editorial team. The associate editors support the editorial committee in particular in the field of their expertise.
Nominees for the editorship should have proven excellence and broad expertise in (European) population studies and a good overview of the disciplines involved in the study of population. Furthermore, the nominee should possess managerial skills and represent a team approach to leadership. A good command of English is a requisite. Nominees need sound institutional backing to successfully carry out their duties as an Editor. Springer reimburses the Editors by means of an annual fee.
Nominees for the book review editorship should have a broad and up to date overview of publications in the field of population studies. The book review editor is responsible for acquiring suitable books for reviewing, finding suitable reviewers, getting books reviewed in a timely fashion and providing the Editorial Committee with approximately two reviews per issues.
Both the new editor’s and the new book review editor’s name will appear on the masthead starting with the 2010 volume. The editor and book review editor are expected to serve until 2014 through the completion of the work required for the volume scheduled in that year. Self-nominations from potential editors and book review editors are encouraged. For further information on the European Journal of Population, please visit our website www.springer.com.
Letters of nomination and a CV including a list of publications should be sent to both Springer and the EAPS council at: evelien.bakker@springer.com and eaps@nidi.nl.
The deadline for nominations is OCTOBER 5, 2009.

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEMS (EOLSS)
(An Integrated Compendium of Twenty Encyclopedias)
(Peer reviewed body of state-of-the-art archival knowledge edited by hundreds of subject experts with contributions from over 8000 reputed authors from more than 100 countries)
The first Earth Summit of 1992, Rio de Janeiro, issued a document that is now famous as Agenda 21 which refers to the Earth's Life Support Systems, considering the whole of our planet as a grand intensive care unit supporting all forms of life and human engineered systems. The EOLSS is based on this concept and definition of 'Life Support Systems' and developed under the auspices of the UNESCO and the direction of the UNESCO-EOLSS Joint Committee
It is a nested 'Encyclopedia of Encyclopedias', presenting a wide range of subjects from state-of-the-art panoramic overviews to in-depth presentations. Subjects include: Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Biological, Physiological and Health sciences; Demography; Mathematical and Physical Sciences; Chemical Sciences; Water Sciences and Engineering; Energy Sciences and Engineering; Biotechnology ; Tropical Biology and Conservation Management ; Land Use, Land Cover and Soil Sciences; Control Systems, Robotics and Automation; Environmental and Ecological Sciences and Engineering; Food and Agricultural Sciences; Human Resources Policy, Development, and Management; Natural Resources Policy; Development and Economic Sciences; Ships and Offshore Structures; Regional Sustainable Development; Social Sciences and Humanities; Institutional and Infrastructural Resources.
Unlike most encyclopedias, the contents of which are alphabetically arranged, EOLSS body of knowledge is thematically organized. EOLSS is a convenient reference for traditional disciplines and interdisciplinary subjects and provides a holistic understanding of many current problems through transdisciplinary pathways. It is rapidly becoming the most sought-after authoritative reference in the world as it is accessible online from anywhere in the world with the touch of a button. It is augmented and updated as often as every month making the EOLSS as a virtual LIVING LIBRARY.
EOLSS body of knowledge is also made available in the form of e-books in pdf format. Presently about 340 e-books (volumes) are ready and gradually this number will increase to ultimately capture the entire EOLSS-online body of knowledge in about 600 volumes. Proposals are presently being studied for making the e-books also available in some major languages in addition to the original set in English in collaboration with the Universal Networking Digital Language (UNDL) Foundation, Geneva, Switzerland.

A new master’s degree program: PoDePro (Population, Development, Foresight)
The Department of Planning and Regional Development (Laboratory of Demographic and Social Analyses) of the University of Thessaly (Greece) and the Institute of Demography Studies and the Center of Development Economics of the University Montesquieu-Bordeaux IV (France) offer a joint post-graduate Program.
PoDePro leads to an M.Sc. degree in Demography and the Economics of Development and Integration with specialization in Foresight.
This joint Master’s degree program is a one-year course (two semesters: the first in Bordeaux, the second in Volos) and comprises four modules followed by practicum and the submission of an extended dissertation.
The aim of this Master program is to provide graduates of various disciplines and background with specialization concerning the cross-cutting issues of demography and sustainable development, the knowledge of which is a prerequisite for strategic planning at all spatial levels. Its graduates are ideally trained to engage in a consulting or executive capacity in the broad field of development planning at central and regional levels. The theory and practice of the educational process are based on an interdisciplinary approach which is necessitated by the character of the scientific fields involved.
The lectures and examinations are in French and the suggested literature in French and English. Thus, sufficient knowledge of these two languages is a prerequisite.
For more information, please consult www.podepro.prd.uth.gr or contact: in France, the secretariat of Iedub (tel. +33 556848699, email: iedub@u-bordeaux4.fr) or prof Christophe Bergouignan (email : bergou@u-bordeaux4.fr, chbergui@yahoo.com.); in Greece, the secretariat of PoDePro (tel. + 30 24 210 74 442) or Prof. Byron Kotzamanis (email : podepro@prd.uth.gr).

Despite their strategic place and role in Europe, the Balkans comprise a region the demography of which – in the broad sense of the term – has attracted relatively little attention. It is also a region where changes that occurred in the last twenty years have been so profound that all aspects of its environment have been radically affected.
In Europe, and in the international community as a whole, there is a real need for knowledge on issues such as population distribution and dynamics in the Balkan region, the demography of ethnic, linguistic and religious minorities, migration potential or the impact of evolution of health and social conditions on life expectancy.
In the effort to fill this knowledge gap, demographers from different European countries–decided to form a network in 1996 named DEMOBALK i.e. Demography of the Balkans. In 2007, the network was transformed into an international association based in Greece (Laboratory of Demographic and Social Analysis (LDSA), Department of Planning and Regional Development, University of Thessaly, Volos)
DEMOBALK’s expansion and the acquirement of legal status have not modified its initial objectives, i.e:
- Stimulate cooperation between scientists and institutions working on population issues in the Balkans.
- Promote the exchange of documentation and information.
- Set up a national and regional demographic database.
- Stimulate research and comparative studies.
- Assess the consequences of demographic trends and alert institutions to the dangers and risks.
- Organize scientific meetings.
- Disseminate the most interesting research findings.
Independently of its role in the creation and regular updating of a large demographic database (linked to a map collection and a geographical information system) DEMOBALKis engaged in an ambitious programme of international conferences and publications.
Via its members, the Association is also closely involved in various data collection operations that have taken place in the Balkans over the last few years. In addition, DEMOBALKis actively associated with various academic and vocational training courses in demography and statistics.
