Outline: The purpose of the session is to discuss the future needs of demographic statistics, the possible systems that should recommended, and how the collected data should be processed and distributed.

1. The necessity for discussing what kind of demographic statistics are needed for future population policies and population analysis. For this purpose, it should be taken into account the demographic variables producing change in the populations. It should be taken into account that the conference will be held after several countries have taken their 2000 censuses, and therefore:

  • There will be a need for discussing and planning the tabulations of census data collected recently in censuses, and how such information will allow to have a good knowledge of the different social, economic and religious groups in each country.
  • The need for further discussion about useful information for development that should be collected in the future.

2. Which collecting methods of demographic characteristics should be encouraged? This part should be taken into account the status of the collection system in each country. Mainly for countries

  • Countries without collection system of demographic data.
  • Countries with a collection system, but incomplete.
  • Countries with complete data collection system.

For those countries without a demographic statistical system, the discussion should concentrate in how to implement a statistical system. For countries with incomplete demographic statistical systems, the discussion should be concentrated on how to improve such a system not only about its integrity, but also about its quality and type of statistics that should be collected. Finally, for those countries with have a complete demographic statistical system the discussion should concentrate on the additional information that will be needed given the expected population trends during the next decades. The discussion should include which are the best demographic statistical systems that should recommended.

3. Processing and dissemination of the information. It should be discussed the priority that should be give to the process of the data and how to disseminate the information. The information is most useful if the collection data is accurate and if the information is available during a short period of the collection.

4. What to do with the data. In this session it should be discussed the priorities of the data analysis that can be and should be produced based on the information collected. How the demographic data should be used in different areas of development and the analysis that should be conducted.
