EUROPEAN POPULATION DAY

Tours, 21 July 2005

The European Population Day took place in Tours (Vinci Centre) on Tuesday, July, 21st during the IUSSP international population conference. It brought together demographers, researchers from other fields and policy makers to discuss the key issues involved in the European construction.

Four topics were on the programme:

• Reproduction and family structure

• Ageing

• International migration

• Population and urbanization.

Four successive sessions were planned for each topic, the first one to draw up a state of the art, the next ones to debate on new issues. The presentation session drew a comparative picture of the situation in Europe. The following three round tables involved researchers and policy makers to discuss the understanding and the challenges related to recent demographic trends in Europe. A plenary session closed the European Population Day. After speeches from local authorities, it was organised as a debate on the question: "Should we worry about the future of Europe's population?"

The European Population Day was organised by the National Organising Committee, with the support of the European Commission.
