XXVI IUSSP International Population Conference

Welcome to the home page of the XXVI IUSSP International Population Conference

At the kind invitation of the Moroccan Government, the XXVI IUSSP International Population Conference will be held at the Palais des Congrès in Marrakech, Morocco. This will be the first IUSSP International Population Conference to be held on the African continent and in an Arab country.

Marrakech offers state-of-the-art conference facilities and is a fascinating city in a region well known for its hospitality. The IUSSP and the Moroccan National Organising Committee (NOC) expect over 1500 participants and warmly invite all members of the population community to submit a paper/poster proposal and to plan on attending this important international event.

The Conference will open on Sunday, 27 September 2009, and conclude on Friday, 2 October 2009. It will include over 180 regular scientific sessions, poster sessions, and training sessions, as well as plenary and debate sessions, side meetings and exhibitions. Simultaneous translation in French and English will be provided for all plenary, debate, regular and training sessions. In addition, simultaneous translation in Arabic will be provided for all plenary and debate sessions and all sessions organized by the Moroccan NOC on population issues in the Arab world.

Call for papers and posters

Submissions of abstracts should be made on the programme website http://iussp2009.princeton.edu
The IUSSP is very grateful to the Office of Population Research and Princeton University for hosting the Scientific Programme website on its server and providing the software which powers it. We are particularly grateful to Dr.Germán Rodríguez for developing and adapting the software to our needs and for providing technical support..

The scientific programme of the Conference will be built from the submissions by the participants. This Call for papers lists 23 general themes and some 98 sessions of the expected total of 180 Conference sessions and invites members of the population community to submit abstracts of proposed session papers to the appropriate session or theme. For a list of sessions and their description please click here. Abstracts not fitting a predefined session should be submitted to one of the 23 general theme sessions. Theme conveners will create new sessions based on the number of high quality submissions received. Organisers and conveners will select papers for presentation at the Conference on the basis of the relevance and merits of the abstracts submitted to the proposed sessions.

The Moroccan National Organising Committee (NOC) is organizing regular sessions and one plenary session which will address population trends and policies in the Arab region. These sessions are listed as part of the call for papers under Theme 22, and members of the scientific community working in the region are especially invited to submit abstracts to these sessions.

Financial Assistance

All participants are encouraged to seek financial support from their own institutions, other national bodies, local representatives of international donors, international institutions and foundations active in the population field. While the IUSSP and the NOC hope to provide a limited number of travel awards, priority for these awards will be given to participants from low-income countries whose paper or poster has been accepted for the scientific programme, or who are serving as chair or discussant, and who are IUSSP members in good standing. Participants who meet the above criteria will be able to apply for financial assistance from 1 March 2009.
