IUSSP Workshop on Estimating Migration with R

This training workshop will be organized at the International Forum on Migration Statistics (IFMS) in  Cairo, Egypt, 19-21 January 2020.

Description


Despite the increasing importance of migration to population change, data is often of poor quality or missing. Methods to estimate migration have been developed by demographers and alike to help address these shortfalls and provide a platform to better understand migration patterns and trends.

 

Organized by the IUSSP Scientific Panel on International Migration: Strengthening the Knowledge Base for Policy this workshop explores methods for estimating migration and their implementation in R. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be familiar with typical measures of migration, common estimation methods to overcome inadequate or missing origin-destination migration data and recent methods to visualize migration patterns using R.

 

Practical hands-on exercises will be emphasized throughout the workshop to build up participants’ experience. Workshop participants will need to bring their own laptop and have downloaded R prior to the conferenceSome prior knowledge of R is necessary.

Participation in this workshop will be restricted to IFMS participants and the number of workshop participants will be limited so that the trainer can provide individual support when necessary.
