WORK SESSION ON DEMOGRAPHIC PROJECTIONS
Organised in cooperation with Istat
(Rome, 29-31 October 2013)
CALL FOR PAPERS
Eurostat and UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) are co-organisers, with
the support of Istat (Istituto Nazionale di Statistica), of a Work Session on Demographic
Projections. The meeting will be hosted by Istat and held in Rome on 29-31 October 2013. The
meeting is part of a series of meetings jointly organized in this area by Eurostat and UNECE.
OBJECTIVE OF THE MEETING
The objective of the Work Session is to bring together policy makers, demographic researchers
from the National Statistical Institutes as well as from other national and international
organisations, academics, producers and users of population projections in order to:
- review and discuss the different uses of demographic projections and the current practices
at national and international level
- illustrate research approaches and innovative methodologies
- improve the communication between policy makers and demographers and producers of
population projections

- National and international practices on demographic projections
- Actual and potential use of demographic projections at national and international level

- Impact of economic crises on projections assumptions setting
- Consistency between macroeconomic assumptions and demographic scenarios
- Small population and sub-national population projections
- Households projections
- New methodologies and stochastic approaches
- Beyond population projections by age and sex: inclusion of additional population
characteristics

INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS
The working language of the work session is English. Authors willing to contribute a paper to the
Work Session should send an abstract in English of approximately 500 words by 15 May 2013 to
the following email address: estat-worksession-demproj@ec.europa.eu
The abstract should include:
- the title of the paper;
- each author’s name and e-mail address (please specify a contact author);
- each author's institutional affiliation, including academic department, if appropriate.
- a clear description of the problems/issues addressed in the paper;
- a short description of the data and methods used;
The Scientific Committee will identify among the papers submitted the invited papers, that will be
presented at the meeting. Authors of all papers will be notified of the category of the paper (invited
or supporting) by e-mail by 31 May 2013. Final version of the papers in Word - not exceeding 20
pages in length (including tables, references, annexes, etc.) - must be sent by 30 September 2013

Final papers can be submitted in English, French and Russian, but will not be translated and will
be disseminated in the original language only. Authors are encouraged to submit papers in English
to facilitate their dissemination among the participants in the meeting. If papers are submitted in
French or Russian, authors are kindly invited to provide a 1-2 pages abstract in English.
